Setenta anos após a publicação de Grande sertão: veredas, o acervo de Guimarães Rosa no IEB-USP e os papéis guardados pela família seguem revelando manuscritos, mapas e projetos inacabados a pesquisadores. Manuel Cavalcanti Proença (1905-1966), romancista e crítico literário, em Trilhas no grande sertão (1958), enxergou no romance uma superposição de planos: subjetivo, coletivo.

Antonio Candido (1918-2017), sociólogo, crítico literário e professor universitário, no ensaio O homem dos avessos (1962), definiu o livro como “o primeiro grande romance. O livro, segundo Bolle, conversa com os principais retratos do país, a começar pela obra “matricial” de Euclides da Cunha, Os sertões (1902).
