More recently, a 1971 Perseid sighting by singer-songwriter John Denver inspired one of the best-known odes to nature's knack for touching our hearts. The shower is active from July 7th through August 24th, peaking the night of August 12-13.
The most I've seen in an hour from my borderline rural sky is around 40. A study by the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) tallied 568 Perseid fireballs from 2008 to 2013, nearly 150 more than the second-place.
What gives the story weight is not just the object itself, but the way the measurement trims the range of plausible physical explanations. Astronomy has accumulated enough cases to know that the most interesting results are rarely the ones that confirm expectations cleanly; they are the ones that confirm some expectations while complicating others, or that open a parameter space that previous instruments could not reach. The scientific community evaluates these contributions by asking whether the new data constrain a model in a way that older data could not, and whether those constraints survive systematic review.
Most Perseids are sand-grain-size cast-offs from Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which American astronomers Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle independently discovered only three days apart. Every year in July and August, Earth crosses 109P's dusty-pebbly orbital trail.
